Do you remember these? This was my 2008 project of one art card a week, the only rule was the size but other than that I was free to choose my colours and theme. I put each card away as I finished them then on 31.12.08 did a grand opening and saw what I'd achieved during the year laid out in front of me. As a project it was a good one as by the end of it I had a visual diary of my year and had learnt a lot more about the kind of art and techniques I prefer. It was also an exercise in self-discipline and actually getting stuff done! I didn't have any such project last year and time just drifted by, also not always such a bad thing but this year I wanted to set myself a goal of some sort
So here it is, a cigar box, now unstuck which is set to become a ... (drum roll)
wardrobe!! Let's play Dress Up! My project is to create a dress every month this year and hang it in my cupboard, by the end of the year I should have 12 fine creations fit for any self respecting style guru. Now, being a jeans and t-shirt kind of a gal this is more out of my comfort zone than you might imagine, but that's the whole point really. The template comes from an article called 'Dressed Up' by Connie Govea Stuart in Somerset Life, Vol 2007. I've seen various 'dress' swaps on Blogs in the past year and there are some funky designs out there. I like the idea of making something to display and add to throughout the year. I can imagine the dresses might reflect the time of the year, Easter, Christmas, plain, fancy, whatever, the possiblilties are endless. Anyone want to play along?
Somewhere, although I don't remember where I saw the instructions for making hangers. I started with a 12cm piece of wire which is bent around a pencil to form the corners then twisted at the top. I cut a piece of dowel for the clothing pole which is set to the front of the box to allow the dresses to hang. Easy huh? what are you waiting for? Let's play Dress Up!
oh oh oh! this is so cute! I have been trying to get back my collaging/paper playing/stuff altering artist side, this may be the idea i need to get going at it. thanks for the inspiration!
adorable! and I am giggling out loud! GOL!
You continue to surprise! (and amaze) I love it!
You'll have to talk me into it - as I said a while back I became very disillusioned with what I was doing.
I'm consentrating on my house & garden... however there is that cupboard under the sink I cleared out for art stuff and it does seem a shame to waste it .....
Brilliant and inspiring as always you are Ms M!
making your own little hangers too, Love that!
You are tempting me ... I will certainly enjoy seeing your cupboard fill up with lovelies!
I can see a distinct need for buttons and lace!! What size is your little dress?

And congratulations for those 52 cards you made. Perhaps I should do something like that as well. Somehow I seem to be drifting along, a little bit burnt out creative wise. I even let my blog slip away....

It will most likely be March before I have one to show....maybe I'll get one done before February is over.
Thanks so much for the fun project idea,
Count me in....I'm going to use my own dress template if that's ok. I'm assuming there's not a real size limit that we can make either just as long as it's a dress. :0)
Let the fun begin!
Being the fashionista I am... love this challenge... just came upon it though so I have some catching up to do... Gee and I just purchased some old cigar boxes that had not found a home yet.... can't wait to start ! :)

Hello again! I'm back (a day later)- and I have some sweet news to share.
Not only did I sar my dress(es)- I have 3 in the works, already; but my 10 yr old daughter decided to craft along with me. Being much less of a perfectionist than I am, she has already finished her first 2 dresses, and is halfway finished with her third!
The first is a regular dress, following the pattern that I drew up; but the second is a variation, complete with tights- or 'skinny jeans', she says; and the third is a halter top & pant set.
I had given her a 12x12 cardboard envelope type thing to keep her project together in- and she cleverly used the bottom flap to draw her 'model' on. She says that is so she doesn't get lost "while she is out 'shopping'"... Lol.
I just wanted you to know how much fun we are having with your inspiration- and how is being used to not only create art- but to bring people together as well.
Thanks ever so much! I will be posting my link & our photos to my blog- just as soon as I can 'catch up' to my daughter.
heh heh heh. :0)

Hi, I love your project and have been following your blog, but haven't made a dress yet and would love to try, but I don't have the template you're using-could you send it my way, please? Thanks so much!
Wow--this is so cute!!
I know I am very late joining the fun but I just found your site nd cannot resist this project! When I complete a few dresses this is the site I will posting from:
Thanks so much!
I love your paper dress. I have been making paper dolls with unique art style. I am currently challenged by making appropriate dresses for my dolls.
So I would be most grateful if you can kindly give a piece of advice on appropriate dresses, in terms of material and style, with flexibility for the doll movements (my little paper dolls can move, even though they stay framed for most of the time).
http://www.shwethirikhit.com/p/doll.html The link here can show the typical ‘Moving Doll in the Frame’ that I develop.
I look forward to hearing from you.
